Adding a Network Printer - Windows
Important Note: Adding a network printer to your computer can only be done after coordinating its initial setup with a network administrator. If this has not yet been done, please visit or contact the Service Desk for more in-depth assistance.
Computers on Active Directory (Configured by Service Desk)
- Go to your Windows desktop.
- Find the "Add Printers" icon located there.
- Open the icon. You will also find a simple directions sheet in there.
- Look for the physical name tag on your printer. This is how we identify the printer for internal purposes.
- If your printer doesn't have a name tag, please report this to the Service Desk. This is a sign that the setup for the device was never completed. We will assist with completing the setup or labeling of your printer.
- Find the name of the printer that you want to connect. This will match the name tag that is physically on the unit.
- If you cannot find your printer in the list, report this to the Service Desk. This is a sign that the setup for the device was never completed. We will assist with completing the setup
- Double-click (or right click and "Connect...") to add the printer to your local computer.
- Occasionally the driver installation times out and an error message is displayed. Please wait 30 seconds and then try again.
Computers Not on Active Directory, or Personal Computers (Not UMD Owned)
You will need to know the name of the printer you want to print to; in the Engineering, Physics, and Math environments, that is usually the white sticker on the printer, e.g. ENGRPTAVW1449. The full hostname will be as follows:
- Engineering: <printer name>.eng.umd.edu
- Physics: <printer name>.physics.umd.edu
- Math: <printer name>.math.umd.edu
In our example, we'll use ENGRPTAVW1449.eng.umd.edu as our full hostname. At the instructions listed here, choose "To install or add a wired or local printer," and use the full hostname of the printer you want to add when prompted.
Please feel free to reach out to the Service Desk for assistance if you have trouble connecting through these methods.
