Google Workspace (Drive) - Storage Limits
The key takeaway: Google Workspace Shared Drives start with a 1 TB quota. You may request a shared drive through DivIT of up to 5 TB, if you have business justification. Greater than 5 TB, you can start purchasing blocks of 10 TB for $1,440/year.
The Details, from DivIT:
As of March 27th, 2024, University-managed Google Workspace accounts, UMD Google (for faculty, staff, and graduate students) and TERPmail (for undergraduate students and alumni), will be subject to new storage limitations. This change is necessary because Google has eliminated unlimited storage for its higher education clients.
The university will apply the following storage limits to all UMD Google Workspace individual accounts (not shared):
- Faculty and staff: 256 GB
- Current students: 256 GB
- Alumni: 15 GB
The storage limit includes Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. You can check your storage usage any time.
User Impact:
Approximately 99% of the UMD community falls within the new storage limits listed above and will be able to continue using UMD Google as usual while being advised to monitor their storage usage.
The remaining 1% of UMD users that are near or above the new limit will be given several months to reduce their space usage. The Division of IT will reach out to them directly with more details and will support them in the months to come as they reduce their Google Workspace storage and adapt to storage alternatives. Faculty and staff with specific business needs will be able to apply for higher storage limits.
Alumni accounts will be limited to 15 GB of storage space. Upon graduating, new alumni using more than 15 GB of storage will have about a year to reduce their storage usage. If they do not, then items will be deleted.
