For Staff, Faculty, and Graduate Students in the Engineering, Physics, and Math departments, whole disk encryption is being managed by the EIT Service Desk. If you need assistance or have questions, reach out to us at eit-help@umd.edu. Read more at the news article link above.
If you received a new or rebuilt computer from the Service Desk within the last few months, then it's highly likely your drive is already encrypted. We have a procedure to backup all encryption keys, which we perform on every new or rebuilt machine that we've worked on in the past few months. Please do not enable disk encryption without the Service Desk's assistance.
It is very important that this encryption key be backed up by us. If it is not backed up properly, data has the potential to be irrevocably lost, should the key be lost or inaccessible.
So don't panic, and let us enable your encryption and back up your key. We can do this remotely at rhelp.umd.edu, or via the "Computing Help Desk" icon on Windows desktops, any time between 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri. It usually takes less than 5 minutes to back up the key.
If you need to request a disk encryption exception from campus, please reach out to us so we can work on the submission form with you. Thank you!
