Adding a Network Printer - Windows 10
For customers using an Active Directory logon or not, these directions will walk through the simple procedure of adding a network printer to a computer in our environment.
Important Note: Adding a network printer to your computer can only be done after coordinating its initial setup with a network administrator. If this has not yet been done, please visit or contact the Service Desk for more in-depth assistance.
Computers on Active Directory
- Go to your Windows desktop.
- Find the "Add Printers" icon located there.
- Open the icon. You will also find a simple directions sheet in there.
- Look for the physical name tag on your printer. This is how we identify the printer for internal purposes.
- If your printer doesn't have a name tag, please report this to the Service Desk. This is a sign that the setup for the device was never completed. We will assist with completing the setup or labeling of your printer.
- Find the name of the printer that you want to connect. This will match the name tag that is physically on the unit.
- If you cannot find your printer in the list, report this to the Service Desk. This is a sign that the setup for the device was never completed. We will assist with completing the setup
- Double-click (or right click and "Connect...") to add the printer to your local computer.
- Occasionally the driver installation times out and an error message is displayed. Please wait 30 seconds and then try again.
Computers Not on Active Directory or Personal Computers
- Navigate to the following network path: \\print.eng.umd.edu\print
- You may be prompted for authentication to the print server.
- You will use "AD\directoryID" and your directory password to authenticate.
