Comparing Linux Options
Comparison of the different Linux options offered
- All of these options include the required campus software and central authentication (use your UMD username and password to login).
- Non-Glue
- Red Hat and Ubuntu supported.
- Recommended for research use.
- No central file server option. All storage is local.
- User management can be performed by EIT or by the customer but it is less straightforward than glue.
- Patching is handled by EIT and is typically done on weekends.
- Simplified setup for long running jobs and for large home space storage needs. Home space isn't backed up.
- Glue
- Red Hat 8 or 9 only. Red Hat 10 coming.
- Required for anything teaching related.
- Central file server option with small home space. The central file server provides easy access to a variety of software from any glue computer. Small home space is mapped on all glue computers but the 5 GB standard quota is limiting.
- Easy user management that can be performed by the customer.
- Patching is controlled by the Division of IT which means the timing may not be ideal and a reboot may be required during normal working hours.
- Long running jobs that require home space access require additional configuration. Large home space needs require redirection to local storage. Local storage is not backed up but small home spaces are backed up nightly.
