Connect your AI tools to UMD IT Knowledge
Overview
The IT Knowledge MCP lets you search publicly available IT Service Desk and Engineering IT knowledge base articles directly from AI tools like Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, and other MCP-compatible assistants. Instead of browsing the knowledge base manually, you can ask questions in natural language and get answers sourced from official UMD IT documentation.
Server URL: https://kb-mcp.eds.umd.edu/mcp
Requirements
- An active UMD Directory ID (available to all UMD faculty, staff, and students)
- A supported AI tool such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Atlassian Rovo, or any MCP-compatible client
You will be prompted to log in with your UMD Directory ID the first time you connect. After that, authentication is automatic.
Setup
For step-by-step setup instructions for your specific tool, visit the IT Knowledge MCP homepage:
The page includes configuration guides for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Atlassian Rovo, and other MCP-compatible tools.
What Can You Ask?
Once connected, you can ask your AI assistant questions like:
- "How do I connect to the UMD VPN?"
- "What printers are in the engineering building?"
- "How do I set up UMD email on my phone?"
- "What software is available through UMD?"
- "How do I reset my directory password?"
- "How do I map a network drive?"
The assistant will search the IT knowledge bases and return relevant answers sourced from official documentation.
